IVRT is used to measure the release rate of an active component from a semi-solid dosage form under controlled conditions. This technique is used to assess the performance of ointments, creams, gels, lacquers and other semi-solid dosage forms.
IVRT is useful for:
- Guiding formulation development
- Assessing the quality of a sample by determining whether the release of active from the formulation is within acceptable limits (often used for release and stability testing)
- Comparing finished products with different formulations
- Confirming the acceptability of changes to manufacturing procedures during scale-up or post-marketing changes
While the results from IVRT do not necessarily simulate in vivo exposure, they can be extremely useful assessments of product quality and performance, similar to dissolution testing for solid dosage forms.
IVRT is not a commonly available testing technique, and it requires specialized equipment. ASI has extensive experience and expertise developing and validating IVRT methods and performing routine IVRT testing.
